About the School:

The School of Creative Arts traces its distinguished history back to 1852 when the Cheltenham School of Art was established. Today, as one of the four constituent Schools at the University of Gloucestershire, the School of Creative Arts currently has over 1,000 students and offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, as well as Postgraduate Research studies.

The Humanities Subject Community within the School includes Religion, Philosophy, and Ethics, English and Creative Writing, and has a strong reputation for high-quality, research-informed teaching of small cohorts which prioritises student experience and achievement. Humanities submitted three Units of Assessment in the recent REF, including History which had the majority of its publications rated 3*.

About the Course:

The BA History Course is a well-established and successful programme within the School of Creative Arts that has seen growth in recent years. Comprised of a small team of dedicated staff and researchers, the degree focuses on ‘the making of the modern world’ from the late medieval era to the 20th century, with subject strands in British, Russian/Eastern European, European, and American history, and expertise in race, class, gender, religion, culture and memory. All of these subject areas are informed by the research specialisms of the academic staff. The course is based on seminar-style classes that focus on engaging teaching and high levels of academic support. It also integrates a student-led approach into the programme, including research projects, public exhibitions, and work placements via initiatives such as the Cotswold Centre for History & Heritage, and partnerships with external partners. These encourage the application and development of transferrable skills and have helped boost graduate outcomes significantly. The course was ranked 1st for academic support in the National Student Survey in 2024. It was also ranked in the top 10 for student satisfaction in the Complete University Guide 2025, and 12th for teaching quality in The Times Good University Guide in 2023.

The course team are all active researchers with internationally recognized publications and awards as a result of projects that connect local, national and international research networks. While staff are active within their own fields, the department is also rooted within the local area, working in partnership with local government and heritage organizations in Gloucestershire. The team’s portfolio aligns with the University strategy to foster a research-rich culture in which research is valued as a core purpose of the University, and all staff and students have opportunities to engage with high-quality research which creates benefit, impact and enhanced professional outcomes.
