Part Time Hourly Paid Lecturer in History (American History)

School of Creative Arts

 

The History course at Gloucestershire specialises in small-class teaching and a focus on student engagement. It has a strong record of achieving high student satisfaction as well as providing high quality support. We are seeking an inspiring and engaging lecturer to provide cover for a colleague deliver teaching on all or some of the following modules between January and May 2025,

 

The American Century: from Great Depression to Vietnam (HM5417)

This second year module examines some of the major developments in United States history between the Great Depression and the Vietnam War, examining the effects of international conflict, the highs and lows of American capitalism, while considering American society and culture within this period.

 

Black America: from the Blues to Black Power (HM6416)

This final year module examines African American history and culture in the twentieth century from the end of WWI to the rise of the Black Power movement, combining analysis of the ‘long’ Civil Rights struggle with a consideration of African American cultural development.

 

Making the Modern World: Major Themes in History (HM4412)

The candidate would need to teach 6 sessions introducing first-year students to some of the major themes of colonialism, empire and postcolonialism.

 

HM5417 and HM6416 will be delivered in twelve 3-hour sessions between late January and May 2025. HM4412 will be delivered in 6 x 3-hour sessions in the first half of the semester. Duties will also include marking of student work (including into June 2025) and tutorial support for students on the modules.

 

Total contact hours: 90

 

If applicable, for every hour that you teach you will also be paid 1 hour for preparation and 30 minutes for marking.

 

Applications would be welcomed from candidates with:

 

·       a PhD (or close to submitting) in a relevant field;

·       some experience of undergraduate teaching in American History and areas related to the modules

·       strategies for maximising student engagement

·       a coherent teaching philosophy
