Description
PHD STUDENTSHIP IN SPORT & EXERCISE
SCIENCE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF GLOUCESTERSHIRE (OXSTALLS CAMPUS, GLOUCESTER)
STARTING IN MARCH 2022
The
University of Gloucestershire is offering a PhD studentship in Sport &
Exercise Science, to cover the full payment of tuition fees for a home (UK
only) student for three years and an annual stipend of £10,000 for three years.
As part of the stipend, you will be expected to contribute to the School by
providing laboratory demonstrator support for one day per week. This is a
unique opportunity to conduct an exciting novel PhD with a vibrant and
productive research team.
Approximately
one in 10 people, of all ages, continue to experience COVID-19 symptoms and
impaired quality of life more than 12 weeks after symptoms first appear.
Experience of persistent symptoms has been termed long-COVID. Those with long-COVID
are known to experience a greater and persistent inflammatory response, and
impairments in arterial health are to be expected.
Our
project is seeking to determine 1) whether the known detrimental effects of
prolonged uninterrupted sitting on arterial health, cognition, and fatigue, are
worsened in patients with long-COVID syndrome when compared to a healthy
population, and 2) how different physical activity interruptions may help
off-set or mitigate these vascular and cognitive dysfunctions. The successful
candidate would be expected to learn how to assess key markers of arterial
health, including pulse wave velocity, a measure of arterial stiffness, and
pulse wave analysis to determine blood pressure waveform indices.
Successful
applicants will form part of a well-established research team led by Dr Simon
Fryer.
Applicants
must be UK nationals, have a relevant master’s degree, and an honours degree of
2.1 standard or equivalent in a Sport & Exercise related field. A specific
interest in vascular physiology is essential.
