Description

MASTERS BY RESEARCH STUDENTSHIP IN SPORT & EXERCISE SCIENCE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF GLOUCESTERSHIRE (GLOUCESTER) STARTING IN OCTOBER 2021

The University of Gloucestershire is offering a Masters by Research studentship in Sport & Exercise Science, to cover the full payment of tuition fees for home students for two years and a stipend of £15,285 for one year. This is a unique opportunity to conduct an exciting novel Masters by Research with a vibrant productive research team.

Approximately one in 10 people, of all ages, continue to experience COVID-19 symptoms and impaired quality of life more than 12 weeks after symptoms first appear. Experience of persistent symptoms has been termed long-COVID. Those with long-COVID are known to experience a greater and persistent inflammatory response, and impairments in arterial health are to be expected.

Our project is seeking to determine whether the known detrimental effects of prolonged uninterrupted sitting on arterial health, cognition, and fatigue, are worsened in patients with long-COVID syndrome when compared to a healthy population. The successful candidate would be expected to learn how to assess key markers of arterial health, including pulse wave velocity, a measure of arterial stiffness, and pulse wave analysis to determine blood pressure waveform indices.

Successful applicants will form part of a well-established research team led by Dr Simon Fryer and may have an opportunity to upgrade the research to a PhD.

Applicants must have a BA Hons of at least 2.1 standard or equivalent in Sport & Exercise. A specific interest in vascular physiology is essential.
