Academic Subject Leader - Design 

37 hours per week, 1.0 FTE

The University of Gloucestershire is looking to appoint a senior member of staff to lead and develop the dynamic subject area of Design in the School of Arts. The university’s new Design Centre is located at the beautiful Park Campus in Cheltenham. We are looking for a leading innovator in Design thinking, with a proven track record of successful outcomes in industry, academia and/or pedagogy, to lead the subject group and continue the successful development of our portfolio of design courses.  The Design subject portfolio currently comprises undergraduate courses in Advertising, Fashion Design, Graphic Design, Interior Design, Product Design and the postgraduate MDes in Graphic Design. We are looking for applications from Design specialists with knowledge and experience of at least one of the constituent subjects within the subject group, or a closely related area of practice or research. The successful candidate will be expected to teach into at least one of the Design courses.

 

A key focus for the University is preparing students for their future careers, developing students as distinctive creative individuals with great design skills and professional knowledge. Our students actively participate in national and international design competitions and are consistently successful in achieving top awards.

 

Applicants will ideally have recent experience of teaching in Higher Education as well as research and practical Design experience, and be keen to promote exciting learning experiences incorporating their industry knowledge and connections. The ability to develop partnerships with industry and feeder colleges is a key priority. The appointee will need to have excellent communication skills and demonstrable success when working in a team environment. Applicants should have the ability to deliver teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level, including research supervision.

 

This role has a significant leadership profile and the successful candidate will join the School Executive and be required to have a leadership role in the development of the School of Arts in research, teaching &  learning, recruitment or internationalisation. They will develop the Design subject community so that it continues to build its portfolio as well as grow in regional, national and international reputation.
