Description
Fine Art PhD Scholarship
A
PhD scholarship at University of Gloucestershire
Three
years full time
£6K
pa bursary, gifted by the Mike Holland Trust, plus full fee waiver from
University of Gloucestershire
Applications
are invited for a funded, full-time studentship for an artist/curator to
undertake research through practice exploring the relationship between
contemporary painting and the legacies of concrete and non-representational
art. The research can take the form of a series of exhibition projects, art
practice, writing and/or a combination of all three. The successful applicant
will be encouraged to align their research with projects being developed within
the School of Fine Art that will explore legacies of Abstraction and its human
implications, with potential to research such areas as Concrete Poetry and the
under known aspects of British Systems & Constructive Art. The successful
proposal will be expected to have a strongly international outlook but may also
want to explore specifically local legacies such as the concrete poetry of dom
sylvester houedard and art of Ken Cox. Collaboration with other schools within
the University and with external institutions is encouraged. The University
also has a research relationship with The Wilson/Cheltenham Art Gallery and
Museum, which is expected to become a useful resource for the practical
research as the PhD develops.
The
aim of the research will be to make an original contribution to knowledge that
has roots in the reappraisal of significant and undervalued resources for a
contemporary context. It is likely to conclude with a body of new work in exhibition
form that could be either curated or original work or a combination of both. A
written textual element will be produced that exists in critical relation to
it, providing contextual analysis, elucidating the research process and its
outcomes and acting as a benchmark by which future researchers can identify the
trajectory and content of this particular project.
The
Interview: The interview will provisionally be held in December 2016 or early
January 2017. The planned commencement of the PhD is also in January 2017. The
interview process normally lasts around 3 hours in total and includes a meeting
with the project supervisor(s), a chance to talk to some of our full-time
students and an opportunity to view the campus and Institutional facilities.
You will be asked to make a short presentation on a topic related to the study.
There is also an opportunity to present the supervisory team with an example of
your written work (e.g. an independent study/assignment) at the interview.
Widening
Participation: As part of its mission statement the University is committed to
widening participation for its higher degrees.
Although most candidates will have an undergraduate and/or a Masters
degree, the University is happy to accept applications from candidates with
relevant professional qualifications and work related experience.
